A wedding in many parts
A traditional Khmer wedding is not a single ceremony but a series of rituals, often held over one or two days. Each one has its own meaning, and together they unite not just the couple but both families.
Customs vary between families and provinces, so always check with your elders and achar. Here are the ceremonies you are most likely to see.
The gift procession
The groom and his family walk in a procession to the bride's home carrying trays of fruit, sweets and other gifts. The bride's family welcomes them, and the gifts are presented as a sign of respect and commitment.
Honouring the ancestors
Offerings are made to the ancestors of both families, asking for their blessing on the marriage.
The hair-cutting ceremony
Family members and guests symbolically trim the couple's hair and offer good wishes. It represents cleansing and a fresh start for their new life together.
The candle-circling blessing
Married relatives sit in a circle around the couple and pass lit candles from hand to hand, surrounding them with blessings and protection.
The knot-tying ceremony
This is often the most moving moment. Elders and guests tie red threads around the couple's wrists while giving blessings for happiness, health and a lasting marriage.
The reception
In the evening, guests gather for a dinner party with music and dancing. This is where most guests attend and where wedding gift envelopes are usually given.
Share the schedule with your guests
Guests often want to know which ceremonies they are invited to and at what time. With Theapka, you can list each part of the day on your digital invitation, so everyone arrives at the right moment.
