So you are invited
Being invited to a Khmer wedding is an honour, especially for foreign friends and colleagues. A few simple customs will help you feel comfortable and show respect to the family.
Reply to the invitation
If the invitation asks you to confirm, reply as soon as you can. It helps the family plan food and seating, and it is appreciated more than you might think.
What to wear
For the evening reception, smart, formal clothing is the norm. Men usually wear a shirt with trousers or a suit, and women often wear a dress or traditional outfit. If you are invited to morning ceremonies, dress modestly with shoulders covered.
When to arrive
Arrive around the time on the invitation. The couple and their parents usually greet guests at the entrance, so take a moment to congratulate them and pose for a photo.
The wedding gift envelope
In Cambodia, guests usually give money in an envelope rather than a physical present.
- Write your name clearly on the envelope so the family knows who it is from.
- Hand it in at the gift table or place it in the gift box near the entrance.
- Use clean notes in US dollars or riel.
The amount depends on your relationship with the family and the style of the wedding. If you are unsure, ask a mutual friend or colleague what is usual.
During the reception
Enjoy the food, join the toasts and do not be shy about dancing when the music starts. It is polite to stay at least through dinner.
